We all have heard the saying “If you can’t stay ready, no need to get ready”! In our association efforts to help you STAY READY, here’s a few tips from the MHSAA as you prepare for the upcoming winter season.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Know your assignment, location, start time, partners, and expected arrival time.
Every veteran official has a story about going to the wrong school, taking the wrong exit, or discovering that the ‘gym entrance’ is apparently the only door in the building without a sign. Leave yourself some extra time.
KNOW THE RULES
Stay current on NFHS rules, MHSAA modifications, mechanics, and points of emphasis.
LOOK THE PART
Proper uniform. Proper equipment. Professional appearance.
We’ve all worked with someone who forgot a whistle, flag, coin, pencil, belt – or something else they were absolutely certain was in the bag. Check the bag before leaving home.
COMMUNICATE
Have a meaningful pregame conversation with your crew. Discuss responsibilities, mechanics, communication, and unusual situations.
BE PROFESSIONAL – ESPECIALLY WHEN OTHERS AREN’T
Listen. Communicate. Stay calm. Enforce the rules when necessary.
You cannot control everything that others say or do. However, you can control what you as the official does next.
